Jon Ross

User Experience (UX) Designer-Developer

From September 2019 to May 2020, I will be part of an amazing group enrolled in the PENN Executive Program for Social Innovation Design (XSD)

I am a passionate and highly-trained user experience interface designer plus developer with a track record of innovative thinking and creative problem-solving for a wide variety of clients, industries and work environments.

I began my design career as a student of architecture at SCI-ARC in Los Angeles. I then chose to do my final year as an independent study for a bachelors degree in Design Science, a field of study invented by Buckminster Fuller, who also directed my studies. I eventually started a career in the field of information technology as a desktop technician, then to system and network administration, to front-end web development and recently user interface / user experience design.

I have recently authored an article sharing my experience as a student of architecture and how it influences my work as a UX/UI designer.
"UX Design, UI Design and Software Development" on LinkedIn.

I am a serious fan of "eco-friendly ANYTHING" and the proud owner of a fascinating intelligent electricity-powered transportation machine - a Tesla Model 3!

I am also a volunteer presenter for the Climate Reality Project, a non-profit organization involved in education and advocacy related to climate change.

In summary, I am certain that I will be a key part of your software engineering team's effort to develop leading-edge interactions and interfaces to your websites, web apps and native applications.

Leading-edge design thinking is what I do!

Expertise

I have an Empathetic Imagination

I have the ability to create an internal simulation of someone else's experiences of using a digital application or a web site.

I can visualize in 2D and 3D

I've had this since childhood, the ability to see an object I want to create internally, either flat, layered, time sequenced or in 3-dimensions.

I know Web Interface Technologies

I started with Dreamweaver which generated its own code, then I edited code until I understood it. Eventually I began writing HTML/CSS/JS code and using the Bootstrap framework with Adobe Creative Cloud for building web sites and front-end web applications.

I practice Design Thinking

Design thinking is a process for creative problem solving and exploring the experience of the user as the basis for creating objects. It's iterative in order to understand the user, challenge assumptions, and redefine problems toward the best solution.

Interests

Electric Cars and Solar Power

I am fascinated by the concept of solar powered transportation - at any scale. From when I write the proposal for my BA degree, which was a design for a solar-powered Space Shuttle launch site - to - individual homes with solar panels for an electric family car.

Eco-Friendly Homes

Here are a few of my boards on Pinterest. I collect and curate images of buildings that I find interesting for their design or their functionality:
Glass Barns
Geodesic Domes
Tiny Sustainable

Nature Walks and Bicycling

My favorite spots are all in Philadelphia: Forbidden Drive, Kelly Drive, the Schuylkill River Trail Boardwalk (in downtown Philly) and the Ben Franklin Parkway.

Philosophical Thinking and Conversation

My favorite deep thinking topics:
Ontological Design
Quantified Self
Doing More with Less
